Monitoring campaigns were conducted during the heating season of 2017/2018.

IT01 is located in the southern suburbs of Turin city. The building, consisting of 3 floors above ground, was built in 1966 and is made of concrete. It also has lead pipes, very harmful to health, but no component in asbestos. The school is located along a street with moderate traffic, and with moderate traffic and urban-type driving speed (speed limit 50 km / h or less). It is, however, close to high traffic and high traffic arterial roads: the south ring road of Turin and the Orbassano course. As a result, the school building, despite being immersed in a relatively green neighborhood, thanks to its proximity to an urban park, is exposed to the air pollution generated by heavy traffic that develops nearby. Consequently, the main indoor air pollutant was benzene originated by vehicular traffic, and the IAQ is in the very unhealthy category based on the indoor health index.

IT02 is located in the southern suburbs of Turin city. The building, consisting of 3 floors, is made of concrete, with no asbestos or lead components. It is heated by central heating (district heating with cast iron radiators). The school is located in a mainly residential area, with a moderate traffic and urban-type driving speed (speed limit 50 km / h or less). It is, however, not far from high-speed and high-traffic arterial roads: Corso Traiano and Corso Unione Sovietica, i.e. the main routes to take the southern ring road of Turin. As a result, the school building is exposed to the air pollution generated by heavy traffic flowing nearby and the IAQ is strongly influenced by outdoor pollution, particularly for what concerns the benzene levels, so high that they put the school IAQ in the dangerous category based on the indoor health index.

IT03 is located in a residential area of Turin. The building consists of 4 floors above ground and a basement; it is mainly made of bricks with no lead or asbestos components. Recently (in 2011-2012) it has undergone renovations that have mainly affected the fixtures. The building is heated by central heating (district heating with cast iron radiators). The school is located in a mainly residential area, with a moderate traffic and urban-type driving speed (speed limit 50 km / h or less). It is located, however, near high traffic and high traffic arterial roads such as Corso Cosenza, Corso Unione Sovietica and Corso Giovanni Agnelli. As a result, the school building is exposed to the air pollution generated by the urban traffic that develops nearby. The indoor health index reflects this situation: the general index is very unhealthy, thanks to the very unhealthy levels of benzene.

It is heated by central heating (district heating with cast iron radiators). It is located, however, near high traffic and high traffic arterial roads such as Corso Cosenza, Corso Unione Sovietica and Corso Giovanni Agnelli. As a result, the school building is exposed to the air pollution generated by the urban traffic that develops nearby. As a result, the school building is exposed to the air pollution generated by the heavy traffic that develops nearby. The indoor health index reflects this situation: the general index is dangerous, thanks to the dangerous levels of benzene. Also, there are problems with the comfort parameters, as the registered levels of CO2 are in the unhealthy category.

IT06 is located in the northern suburbs of Turin city. The building consists of 3 floors and is made of brick, concrete, steel and metal sheet, with no lead or asbestos components. During the last 5 years it has undergone renovations affecting the water system, fixtures and insulation. It is heated by central heating (district heating with cast iron radiators). The school is located within a network of internal streets, with a high density of buildings and with moderate traffic and urban-type driving speed (speed limit 50 km / h or less). It is located, however, not far from a high-speed and high-traffic road, Corso Grosseto. As a result, the school building is exposed to the air pollution generated by the heavy traffic that develops nearby. The indoor health index reflects this situation: the general index is dangerous, thanks to the dangerous levels of benzene.

IT07 is located in a residential area of Turin city centre. The building, built in 1968, consists of 5 floors and is made of brick and cement with no asbestos or lead components. During the last 5 years it has undergone renovations involving the fixtures and the insulation system. It is heated by central heating (district heating with cast iron radiators) and is equipped with mechanical ventilation. The school is located within a network of internal streets, with a high density of buildings and with moderate traffic and urban-type driving speed (speed limit 50 km / h or less).It is located not far from high-speed and high-traffic roads, such as Corso Belgio and Corso Casale, and from the river Po and its tributary Dora Riparia. As a result, the school building is exposed to the air pollution generated by the heavy traffic that develops nearby. The indoor health index reflects this situation: the general index is unhealthy, thanks to the unhealthy levels of benzene. Also, there are problems with the comfort parameters, as the registered levels of relative humidity are too low and fall in the unhealthy category.

IT08 is located in a residential area of Turin city centre. The building, built in 1923, consists of 4 floors and a basement and is made of brick and cement. There are no asbestos components in the building, but the water pipes have been made of lead and the building is located in an area affected by the presence of radon. It is heated by central heating (district heating with cast iron radiators). IT09 is located in the northern suburbs of Turin city. The building, built in 1924, consists of 3 floors and is made of bricks, cement and wood with no asbestos or lead components. During the last five years, it has undergone renovations involving the electrical components and the insulation system. It is heated by central heating (district heating with cast iron radiators), it does not have air conditioning and mechanical ventilation is only present in the offices. The school is located within a network of internal streets, with a high density of buildings and with moderate traffic and urban-type driving speed (speed limit 50 km / h or less). It is not located at short distance from high-speed, high- volume traffic roads; nevertheless, the indoor health index is unhealthy, due to high levels of pollutants related to outdoor pollution: unhealthy levels of benzene. Also, there are problems with the comfort parameters, as the registered levels of relative humidity are too low and fall in the unhealthy category.

IT10 is located in a residential area close to Turin city centre. The building, built in 1913, consists of 3 floors and a basement and is made of bricks, cement and wood with no asbestos or lead components. The building has been renovated several times after its construction, having undergone reconstruction works (1929), extension (1958) and restoration (1971 and 1995). The school is located within a network of internal streets, with a high density of buildings and with moderate traffic and urban-type driving speed (speed limit 50 km / h or less). However, it is located at short distance from Corso IV Novembre, a high-speed, high-volume traffic road, and as a result the school building is exposed to the air pollution generated by the heavy traffic that flows nearby. The indoor health index reflects this situation: the general index is dangerous, thanks to the very unhealthy levels of benzene (related to outdoor pollution).

IT11 is located in the residential area of Chieri, a Municipality located on the hill of Turin. The building, built in 1932, consists of 3 floors and is made of bricks and cement with no asbestos or lead components. In 2009 it has undergone a complete renovation. It is heated by central heating (district heating with cast iron radiators). The school is located within a network of internal streets, with a high density of buildings and with moderate traffic and urban-type driving speed (speed limit 50 km / h or less). It is not located at short distance from high-speed, high- volume traffic roads; nevertheless, the indoor health index is moderate, due to moderate levels of benzene. Also, there are problems with the comfort parameters, as the registered levels of relative humidity are too low and fall in the unhealthy category.

IT12 is located in the suburban area of Chieri, a Municipality located on the hill of Turin. The building, built during the Seventies, consists of 2 floors and is made of cement with no asbestos or lead components. In 2009 it has undergone a complete renovation. It is heated by central heating (district heating with cast iron radiators). The school is located on the outskirts of the city, with low density of buildings and with very moderate traffic and with urban-type driving speed (speed limit 50 km / h or less). The indoor air quality reflects this situation as it seems not to be affected by outdoor pollution. The indoor air index is unhealthy due to concentration of benzene. Also, there are problems with the comfort parameters, as the registered levels of relative humidity are too low and fall in the unhealthy category.
