Abstract:
Extraction of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from the sample matrix is a crucial step in
the preparation of sample for the determination of pollutant level. Solvent extraction of solid
sample is one of the oldest ways to pretreat solids, especially in order to extract hydrophobic
compounds such as POPs. A review of various techniques for extraction of POPs from solid matrices
is presented. Efficiencies of two conventional solvent extraction techniques, Soxhlet (SE) and
ultrasound or ultrasonic extraction (USE), were studied and compared having in view their
applicability to the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in fine-ground wheat
samples. USE was shown to be more efficient than SE.
