Present state
To protect against potential dangers and minimize the risk from chemicals, approppriate infrastructure is required to ensure proper chemical management. Elements of such a management system include relevant legislation, information system of chemical safety and development of capacity for poison control.
In Hungary, Health Toxicological Information Service (ETTSZ) has been established in 1970. ETTSZ collects, processes and systematises relevant toxicological, public health and clinical data as part of running a nation-wide register of danger-ous substances and dangerous preparations and a register of products. Since 1990, ETTSZ has, upon request, provided information on data of its coverage 24 hours
a day.
ETTSZ also draws up annual summary reports on human poisoning cases of any origin (suicide, accidental, etc.) occurring in the territory of Hungary. In the fifties hospitals for treatment of poisoning and overdosing as well as toxicological diag-nostic laboratories have been separately established.
