Abstract:
Observations on the health status of 2200 persons working at the Chernobyl
site after the accident – “liquidators” – supervised and treated in our
Center for 10 years have been summarized. A rise of morbidity several years
after the accident was observed, mainly a gradual transition of functional
pathological alterations into organic ones, mostly of the nervous and cardiovascular
systems, respiratory organs, gastrointestinal tract. Long-term monitoring
could reveal the decrease of the levels of chromosome aberrations,
the persistence of the “clastogenic factor”, the level of spermatogenesis,
and lipid peroxidation. The effects of antioxidants are described on the
lipid metabolism and peroxidation as well as on the level of clastogenic
factor following the treatment with antioxidant preparations like alpha-tocopherol,
AscorutineR, AevitR, and LoshtakR.
