To commemorate the 70th birthday of Professor György Ungváry
a ceremonial scientific meeting was organised on 15 June 2007 jointly by the National Institute of
Occupational Health, the Hungarian Scientific Society for Labour Hygiene and Chemical Safety and the
Hungarian Scientific Society for Occupational Medicine. The presentations praised the Professor's
fruitful scientific and tutorial work equally known and acknowledged in Hungary and abroad. Among
others, especially his decisive role in the transformation of the Hungarian factory health care into
modern occupational health care and his leading-guiding activity in the legal harmonization of the
Hungarian preventive medical practice with that of the European Community were stressed. His activity
for global chemical safety acknowledged by a high international award (Award of Merit of the
Intergovernmental Forum for Chemical Safety) was also emphasized and it was recalled that he worked
out the discipline of chemical safety in Hungary and he was the founding director general of the
national institute responsible for this professional area. Between 1990 and 2005 Professor Ungváry
was Director General of the National Institute of Occupational Health, then that of the Fodor József
National Center for Public Health, and in 2002-2003 he was the Chief Medical Officer of State of the
Hungarian Republic. |
